Hiking is a safe outside recreational activity. Though it is relatively safe, you are still outside and could find yourself far from folk and civilization. If you get hurt or need help in anyway, help may not be straight away available. That said you want to keep under consideration several basic safety tips to make your hike an agreeable and safe experience.
Never travel or hike alone. This may not be possible ever single time. If you’re employing a well-traveled trail or route you are in all probability safe. But never get out of the usual trail especially if you’re not acquainted with the terrain or area. Getting lost is always a chance. Always look to go or hike with somebody, ideally one with more experience than you do. You are going to be able to help each other when the need arises.
Always know where you are going. Always let somebody know where you are going, your course and other details of your hike in case you get lost. Always stay on clearly marked and well-traveled trails. Never go off these trails especially if you’re new to the area and have nominal experience. A GPS, compass and a back-up map is sure to be a good back idea to help if you must get lost. Apart from the GPS and map, know as much about the area you can from local people or park employees. They will be able to give you invaluable advice.
Bring only the gear that you need. Even though you’ve got a big enough back pack bring only the gear you will need. Plan carefully what gear you want to take along. It’s no use bringing too much that you are going to eventually not need. A lighter and back-up matches is always a good idea. A knife or better yet one with multiple purpose tools could prove useful. Some other gear you will consider bringing are ; first aid kit, skin lotions ( for third degree burns and itches / insect bites ), additional weather specific clothing like a poncho or long sleeved shirt.
Take with you enough liquids and food. Water is usually a must when you go on a hike. You could be only planning for a short hike and may believe that you will not need any water nevertheless it is always better to be safe than sorry. When you are exposed to prolonged heat, water could be a life saver. Also, bring enough provisions that you are going to need. One pound of food may be good for about a standard sized male for one day. If you chuck in some energy bars, you can increase the calorie level of your food without bringing up their weight.
Use commonsense at all points. We always hear and read about dumb things that folks do that got them into trouble. One easy rule is, if unsure, don’t! Keep safe and enjoy your hike and Mother nature.
